Although
large halls like the George R. Brown Convention Center, the AstroArena,
the Astro Hall, and many hotel conference centers are booked most weeks,
Houston's hotels are never completely booked due to a major convention,
and the city is not a major tourist destination. This means it's difficult
to predict when occupancy will be high or low - you can check hotel availability

Houston's
nearly 50,000 rooms usually come with coffeemakers, ironing boards, hair
dryers, modem lines, and free parking. Hotels that don't have on-site
gym rooms usually offer passes to nearby health clubs for $5 to $10 a
day. The area hotel tax is a manageable six percent of the room rate,
and most hotels offer shuttle service either directly to the airports
or to transportation centers. However, Houston is not a public transportation
town -- guests who are not renting a car should plan to order a cab well
ahead of departure time. Bear in mind that few Houston hotels are in the
midst of a shopping area. If you need toiletries, books, or gym clothes,
you'll probably have to depend on the gift shop or an excursion to a nearby
strip mall.
